How the Fox Glacier Heli-Hike Works
From the briefing on Main Road to up to three hours on the ice and back.
Check in on Main Road
Check in at Fox Glacier Guiding, 44 Main Road, for the weather call and a safety briefing, and get fitted with boots, crampons and a jacket.
Fly onto the glacier
A short bus ride takes you to the helipad, then a five-minute flight drops you on the ice in a part of the glacier you cannot reach on foot.
Up to three hours on the ice
Your guide cuts steps as you walk among ice formations in crampons. Time on the ice depends on the weather on the day.
Fly back to the township
The helicopter lifts you off the glacier and you are back on Main Road about four hours after check-in. If weather cancels, you rebook or get a refund.
How the Day Runs
The Fox Glacier Heli-Hike, Step by Step
The helicopter part is short, about 5 minutes each way on the listing. Most of your 4 hours goes on the ice, in crampons behind your guide, and you fly only if the weather allows on the day. This is the order the GetYourGuide listing and Fox Glacier Guiding give.
- 1. Check in at 44 Main Road — Arrive at Fox Glacier Guiding's base in the township 20 minutes before the departure time on your confirmation. The operator runs 8:50 am and 11:50 am departures all year. The final weather call comes 10 minutes before departure.
- 2. Safety briefing and kit fitting — Allow about 30 minutes. You are fitted with leather boots and socks, crampons and poles, and given a waterproof jacket, overtrousers, a hat, gloves and a small pack. Your own backpack stays behind, and you can carry up to 3 kg. Ask for a fleece if you want an extra layer.
- 3. Bus to the helicopter — A short ride of about 5 minutes takes your group from the base to the helicopter.
- 4. Flight onto the ice — The flight up the valley and onto the glacier takes about 5 minutes. The landing spot depends on conditions on the day.
- 5. Up to 3 hours on the glacier — In crampons, you follow the steps your guide cuts through crevasses, pinnacles and blue ice. Features change from week to week, so no ice cave or formation is promised. Bring your own food and water, because none is provided.
- 6. Flight back and bus to town — A flight of about 5 minutes brings you down, then a 5-minute bus ride and a short break before you finish back at 44 Main Road, about 4 hours after the briefing began.
- If the weather turns — If the call at departure is no-go, you get a full refund or a move to another departure with space, which is why a spare day helps. If cloud comes in while you are on the ice, the group waits with the guide for a flying window, so carry any medication you might need.

Plan Your Heli-Hike
Book Your First Full Day in Fox and Keep the Next One Free
Every Fox Glacier heli-hike depends on the weather on the day, so the spare day in your plan matters as much as the booking.
Book the Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice for the first full day of your stay in Fox Glacier, and keep the day after it free. It is the only Fox Glacier heli-hike sold on GetYourGuide (as of October 2026). Fox Glacier Guiding runs it from 44 Main Road in the township, from $483 per person, and it is rated 4.9 from 370 GetYourGuide reviews. Plan on about 4 hours from check-in to the finish, with up to 3 hours on the ice when the weather allows.
Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe) lies in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the South Island’s West Coast. Floods and a landslide damaged the valley access road in early 2019, and it has stayed closed since, so you cannot walk onto the ice from the valley floor. To stand on the glacier you need a helicopter and a guide, and this trip gives you both.
Prices on this site are per person in US dollars on a real date, checked in October 2026.
How the heli-hike day runs
Check in at Fox Glacier Guiding’s base on Main Road 20 minutes before the departure time on your confirmation. The operator runs departures at 8:50 am and 11:50 am all year, with extra departures on demand. The safety briefing and kit fitting take about half an hour. You are issued leather boots and socks, crampons, walking poles, a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, a hat, gloves and a small pack, and staff can lend you a fleece if you want one more layer.
A bus takes you to the helicopter in about 5 minutes, and the flight onto the glacier takes about 5 more. On the ice your guide cuts steps and you follow them in crampons past crevasses, pinnacles and blue ice, depending on what the glacier holds that week. The ice changes constantly, so the operator promises no particular feature, ice caves included. After up to 3 hours you fly back down, ride the bus to Main Road and finish where you started. Our breakdown of the tour lists every inclusion and the full itinerary.
Who can join, and the limits
The GetYourGuide listing rules out children under 9, people over about 115 kg and wheelchair users. Children from 9 to 16 must be with an adult. Jeans are not allowed, because they turn heavy and cold when wet. The listing asks for a reasonable level of fitness and agility, since the glacier terrain is variable and reasonably challenging, but you need no glacier experience.
If the limits rule you out, or 4 hours is more than you want to give, a scenic flight from Fox puts you on the snow for a few minutes. The 25-minute Fox snow-landing flight leaves from the township from $225 per person, and our Fox Glacier helicopter flights page compares it with the longer flight past Aoraki/Mt Cook. Staying in Franz Josef instead? The twin-glacier flights from there cross both glaciers in one trip.
Fox or Franz Josef
Franz Josef, about 24 km north, has its own heli-hike with a different company, the Franz Josef 2.5-hour heli-hike, from $511 per person with up to 2.5 hours on the ice and a minimum age of 10, and our Franz Josef heli-hike page covers it in full. Fox gives you up to 3 hours on the ice from age 9, and the Fox or Franz Josef guide sets the two trips side by side.
When the helicopter cannot fly
Fox Glacier township averages about 5,000 mm of rain a year, and cloud, wind or rain can ground the helicopters in any season. Fox Glacier Guiding makes its final weather call 10 minutes before departure. If it cancels, you get a full refund or a move to another departure that has space. On a GetYourGuide booking you can cancel free up to 24 hours ahead; inside 24 hours the listing allows no refunds or changes at your own request.
A grounded day still has plenty in it. DOC’s South Side Walkway starts 2 km south of the township, and its first glacier viewpoint is about 40 minutes’ walk in, hundreds of meters from the ice. The Lake Matheson loop takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Two guided half-day walks pick up in Fox and go out in all weather: the Fox Glacier walking and nature tour from $65 and the Lake Matheson nature tour from $68. Our page on Fox Glacier without a helicopter covers each one, and the Lake Matheson tour breakdown covers what that walk includes.
Leave a spare day in your plan
Book the heli-hike for your first full day in Fox and keep the next day open. Fox Glacier Guiding and the GetYourGuide listing both give that advice, and if your trip is cancelled the spare day gives you a second try. One night can work when the sky is clear; two nights give you a real backup. The operator names no best season, since the glacier is walkable all year, and our weather and best-time guide explains how cancellations work and what each season brings. For accommodation in the township, see where to stay in Fox Glacier.
Coming from Queenstown, you face about four and a half hours of driving. No Fox heli-hike package from Queenstown is sold on GetYourGuide; the Queenstown plane-and-heli-hike day flies you to Franz Josef instead, from $1,134 per person. Our Queenstown page compares that day with driving over and staying.
What to wear on the ice
Wear 3 to 4 warm upper layers, such as a light shirt, a long-sleeve fleece and a windbreaker, with track pants or other long pants; shorts are fine in summer. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, any medication you take and your own food and drink, which the trip does not include. Leave your own backpack behind: you carry the supplied pack, with a 3 kg limit. Fox Glacier Guiding puts the temperature on the ice at about 5 to 15 °C in summer and about -5 to 10 °C in winter. Our what to wear guide goes layer by layer.
What it costs
The heli-hike costs from $483 per person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), and our Fox Glacier heli-hike price guide sets that against the operator’s own rate and the cheaper options.
Choosing between the options
If you are still weighing the heli-hike against flights, walks and the Franz Josef trips, our guide to which Fox Glacier tour to book compares all 11 by traveler.
When your Fox dates are fixed, check availability for the first full day of your stay.

"Such a unique and awe inspiring experience. From start to finish it was professional. Safety was paramount. Even though due to bad weather we couldn’t take off on the first time slot, we were kept well informed, safety was their priority and the team made sure we were well informed and had options and were able to get out of the next available time slot. The time of the ice with our guide was informative and so fun!"
"Our helihike experience was fantastic from start to finish. From booking in, safety briefing to the allocation of gear, to our bus trip to the helicopter, the trip itself and then our experience on the ice with Jack our guide was everything we could have imagined and more. Thank you, Fox Glacier Guiding, for creating a truly memorable bucket list activity for us."

Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Frequently Asked Questions
Time on the ice, limits, kit, weather cancellations, cost and where the trip starts, for the heli-hike sold on GetYourGuide.
Plan on about 4 hours from check-in to the finish. The GetYourGuide listing allows up to 3 hours on the ice, depending on the weather, plus a safety briefing of about 30 minutes, a short bus ride each way and a flight of about 5 minutes each way. Fox Glacier Guiding asks you to check in 20 minutes before your departure time, so add that to your morning.
No. The valley road to the old glacier car park was damaged by floods and a landslide in early 2019 and has been closed since. You can walk DOC's South Side Walkway to viewpoints hundreds of meters from the ice, but standing on the glacier takes a helicopter and a guide. See our page on Fox Glacier without a helicopter for the walks.
Wear 3 to 4 warm upper layers and track pants or other long pants, never jeans, which turn heavy and cold when wet. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Fox Glacier Guiding supplies boots, socks, crampons, poles, a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, a hat and gloves. Our what to wear guide covers each layer.
The GetYourGuide listing says the heli-hike is not suitable for children under 9, people over about 115 kg or wheelchair users. Fox Glacier Guiding adds that children from 9 to 16 must be with an adult, and that anyone near the weight limit should contact the company before booking. The listing warns that guests over the limit can have their trip restricted or cancelled, so check before you book.
The listing asks for a reasonable level of fitness and agility, because the glacier terrain is variable and reasonably challenging. Fox Glacier Guiding rates the trip as moderate fitness with no experience needed. You walk in crampons on uneven ice for up to 3 hours, following steps your guide cuts. If that sounds like too much, a 25-minute snow-landing flight is the short option.
Fox Glacier Guiding makes its final weather call 10 minutes before departure. If it cancels for weather, you get a full refund or a move to another departure with space. That is why the operator and the listing both advise booking your first full day in Fox. Our weather and best-time guide explains how to plan around it.
They suit different trips. Fox gives you up to 3 hours on the ice from age 9, from $483 per person on GetYourGuide. The Franz Josef heli-hike, 24 km north, gives up to 2.5 hours from age 10, from $511 per person, and suits you if you are staying in Franz Josef. Our Fox or Franz Josef guide sets them side by side.
The heli-hike costs from $483 per person on GetYourGuide, checked in October 2026 on a real bookable date. Food and drinks and hotel pickup are not included. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead. Our Fox Glacier heli-hike price guide compares that with the operator's own rate and the cheaper flights and walks.
The listing includes two helicopter flights, an expert guide, ground transport between the base and the helicopter, leather boots and socks, crampons, walking poles, and a wet-weather jacket and overtrousers. Fox Glacier Guiding also supplies a hat, gloves and a small pack, and can lend a fleece. Food and drinks and hotel pickup are not included, so bring a snack and water.
It starts and finishes at Fox Glacier Guiding's base, 44 Main Road, in Fox Glacier township. There is no hotel pickup, but the township is small and the base is on the main road. The InterCity bus stop is outside the same building. Check in 20 minutes before the departure time on your confirmation; the operator runs 8:50 am and 11:50 am departures.
Fox Glacier Guiding recommends no particular season and runs the heli-hike all year. On the ice it puts summer at about 5 to 15 °C and winter at about -5 to 10 °C, and rain can come in any month. Your dates matter less than leaving a spare day. Our Fox Glacier weather guide covers each season in more detail.
Not as a day package on GetYourGuide. The nearest option flies from Queenstown to Franz Josef for a heli-hike there, from $1,134 per person, about 6.5 hours. To do the Fox heli-hike itself, drive about four and a half hours or take the bus and stay at least one night. Our heli-hike from Queenstown page compares both routes.
Fox Glacier Guiding states it meets New Zealand's adventure activities regulations and asks every guest to read its Risk Disclosure Statement before booking. Your guide cuts steps in the ice, you wear crampons, and the weather call is made 10 minutes before departure. Pregnant guests should read the operator's FAQ first. See our guide to reviews and safety for more.
