How the Queenstown Fly-In Day Works
Four steps and about 6.5 hours, from your Queenstown hotel to the ice and back.
Pickup and briefing in Queenstown
True South Flights collects you from your hotel and runs a 30-minute safety briefing. Give everyone's full name and approximate weight when you book, because large differences can stop you flying.
Fly over the Alps to the West Coast
A one-hour scenic plane flight crosses the Southern Alps with pilot commentary, and the listing promises a window seat in the plane. A 15-minute bus ride takes you into Franz Josef township.
Gear up and fly onto the ice
At the Glacier Base you get crampons, waterproof jacket and pants and a second 30-minute briefing. A helicopter lifts you onto the Franz Josef Icefall for about 2 hours of guided hiking, weather permitting.
Fly back to Queenstown
The helicopter returns you to the township, the bus takes you to the plane, and a one-hour flight brings you back to Queenstown for the drop-off at your hotel.

Getting a Heli-Hike Into a Queenstown Trip
The fly-in day, the drive to Fox, and who each one suits.
No Fox Glacier heli-hike package from Queenstown is sold on GetYourGuide. The nearest thing is True South Flights’ Queenstown: Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike & Scenic Flight, from $1,134 per person: you fly from Queenstown to Franz Josef, about 25 km north of Fox, and spend about 2 hours walking on Franz Josef Glacier before flying back the same day. To hike on Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe) itself, drive or take the bus to Fox, stay at least two nights, and book Fox Glacier Guiding’s Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice there, from $483 per person.
Quick picks
- One day and no car: the fly-in day, 6.5 hours with hotel pickup in Queenstown, on Franz Josef Glacier.
- Fox Glacier itself: drive or bus to Fox, stay two nights and book the Fox heli-hike, up to 3 hours on the ice, weather permitting.
- The most ice time of the tours compared here: the Franz Josef extended heli-hike, up to about 5.5 hours on the ice, from age 14.
- A shorter trip from Fox: the Fox Glacier and Mount Cook helicopter flight, 35 minutes with a snow landing, from $281.
How the fly-in day works
The day runs on a tight itinerary. True South Flights collects you from your Queenstown hotel and gives a 30-minute safety briefing. A one-hour plane flight crosses the Southern Alps to the West Coast, with pilot commentary, and the listing promises you a window seat in the plane. A 15-minute bus ride takes you into Franz Josef township, where you check in at the Glacier Base, pick up crampons and waterproofs, and sit a second 30-minute briefing.
A 15-minute helicopter flight lifts you onto the Franz Josef Icefall, and you spend about 2 hours hiking with a guide among crevasses and ice formations, weather permitting. Then the order reverses: helicopter, bus and a one-hour flight back to Queenstown, with an hour’s break built in. The listing puts the whole day at 6.5 hours, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
Food is not included. The listing recommends a packed lunch, a small water bottle and sunscreen, and asks for 3 to 4 warm layers, shorts or light trousers (no jeans), sunglasses and any daily medication. Everything you take onto the ice has to fit in the 2-litre waist bag provided, and the listing says lockers in the Glacier Base Building hold the rest.
The limits are strict. The tour is not suitable for children under 10, anyone under 30 kg or over 115 kg, people with mobility impairments, or anyone with a low level of fitness. Give everyone’s full name and approximate weight at booking: large differences can stop you joining.
The weather risk on a one-day trip
You get one attempt. The day depends on flying weather in Queenstown, over the Alps and at Franz Josef, and the West Coast can change quickly. One reviewer’s glacier walk was called off for low cloud after the flight across, although the scenic flight went ahead. The listing gives free cancellation up to 24 hours before but does not set out what happens to the price when only the hike is cancelled, so ask True South Flights before you book. The tour has 28 reviews on GetYourGuide, rated 4.8.
It is also the most expensive tour on this site and the only one that starts in Queenstown. Book it if you have one free day in Queenstown, no car, and you would like the flight over the Alps to be part of the day.
Driving from Queenstown to Fox
The road route runs north through Wanaka and Haast on State Highway 6, the only road into the national park from the south. Glacier Country puts Fox 3 hours 14 minutes (262 km) from Wanaka and Franz Josef 4 hours 40 minutes (351 km) from Queenstown. Fox is about 25 minutes short of Franz Josef on the same road, so plan on roughly four and a half hours at the wheel, and most of a day once you stop for photos and food.
By bus, InterCity takes about 7 hours 15 minutes from Queenstown to Fox, and its main Fox stop is on Main Road outside the Fox Glacier Guides building, where the heli-hike checks in. A journey that long leaves no room for a hike on the day you arrive.
Fill up before the long stretch south of Fox. Fox Glacier Motors sells fuel in the village, and the nearest pumps beyond it are at Haast, about 120 km south, and Franz Josef, about 25 km north. Glacier Country says mobile coverage is limited around Haast. Check NZTA’s live road map before you set off, because slips have closed State Highway 6 on this coast before.
Our getting-there guide has the full table of drive times, buses and flights.
A two-night plan from Queenstown
Fox Glacier Guiding runs the heli-hike at 8:50 am and 11:50 am, with check-in 20 minutes before at 44 Main Road. With two nights you get two chances:
- Day one: drive from Queenstown and settle in. Walk to Lake Matheson in the evening if the sky is clear.
- Day two: the heli-hike, up to 4 hours in total with up to 3 hours on the ice, weather permitting. Fox Glacier Guiding makes its weather call 10 minutes before departure and refunds a cancelled trip in full.
- Day three: your rebooking slot if day two was cancelled. If you already hiked, take the walks without a helicopter before the drive on.
The Fox heli-hike suits ages 9 and up with reasonable fitness, and is not suitable for anyone over about 115 kg or for wheelchair users; leave the jeans at home. For accommodation, see where to stay in Fox Glacier.
Fly-in day or the drive to Fox
Book the fly-in day if you have one day, no car, and the flight across the Alps matters to you. Choose the drive to Fox if you want Fox Glacier itself, more time on the ice and a second chance at the weather. The drive costs you two days, but the Fox heli-hike is $651 less per person, and you walk on the ice for up to 3 hours.
Already planning to stay in Franz Josef? The 2.5-hour Franz Josef heli-hike checks in there, from $511 and rated 4.7 from 404 reviews, the most of the heli-hikes on this site. Our Franz Josef heli-hike page covers both Franz Josef hikes, and the Fox or Franz Josef guide compares the two glaciers in detail.

What Fly-In Heli-Hikers Say
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"A dream come to true to tick off my bucket list as a solo traveller! I met friends and shared the experience. Beautiful majestic scenery displayed and interpreted well. Friendly staff and knowledgeable on safety who took a respectful interest. Safe flights in plane and helicopter. I loved it and would recommend it it to people who are injury free and with a good fitness level. Especially those who like day or afternoon hikes already."
"Great way to see Mount Cook and the glaciers there if you’re short on time from Queenstown"
"True South flights and the pilot Peter was excellent. Informative on the flight to and from Franz Josef. Walking in the glacier was a once in a lifetime experience and amazing"
"The flights (both single engine plane to Mt Cook and then help to glacier) were as much fun as the hike itself. Great pilots (Laura and Nigel respectively) gave a wonderful overview of all we were flying over as well as some of the history and geography, etc Hike was such a unique experience and the blue glaciers were stunning. Too bad that recent rains had reduced caves, nets"
"The flight to Franz Joseph was the most beautiful flight I have ever taken, and I have flown a lot. We had exceptionally clear weather. The hike was challenging for someone my age, but I am so proud I did it. It was amazing! Our guide was friendly and extremely safety conscious. However, on more than one occasion I felt rushed. This was a bucket list experience for me, and that definitely detracted from the experience."
"What a way to finish a amazing trip! Just when we thought we had seen the best Otago/fiordland had to offer, we arrived at true south office and booked in, the staff were amazing, we met James our pilot and he told us what was happening. The flight was just amazing, James was outstanding, not just as a pilot, but his knowledge and friendliness was a credit. The staff at Mt Cook, our guide Scott and the whole glacier experience will stay with us always. Mike the chopper pilot was outstanding. All we can say is .... WOW"
"Was absolutely incredible. Would highly recommend spending the extra money and getting the plane up to the Heli-Hike experience!"

Fox Glacier from Queenstown: Common Questions
Fly-in day trips, the drive and bus to Fox, the weather risk and how many nights to plan.
Not as a package on GetYourGuide. The closest option is True South Flights' fly-in day from Queenstown, which lands you at Franz Josef, about 25 km north of Fox, for about 2 hours on Franz Josef Glacier, from $1,134 per person. To hike on Fox Glacier itself, travel to Fox and book the heli-hike there, from $483. See our Fox heli-hike breakdown.
Hotel pickup in Queenstown and a 30-minute briefing, then a one-hour plane flight over the Southern Alps and a 15-minute bus into Franz Josef. After a second briefing and kit fitting, a helicopter lifts you onto the Franz Josef Icefall for about 2 hours of guided hiking, weather permitting. The trip back reverses the order. The listing puts the whole day at 6.5 hours, with food not included.
Plan on roughly four and a half hours of driving, and most of a day with stops. Glacier Country puts Franz Josef 4 hours 40 minutes (351 km) from Queenstown, and Fox is about 25 minutes short of it on the same road through Wanaka and Haast. Fox to Wanaka alone is 3 hours 14 minutes. Our getting-there guide has the full table.
Yes. InterCity takes about 7 hours 15 minutes from Queenstown to Fox Glacier, and its main stop in Fox is on Main Road outside the Fox Glacier Guides building, the same place the heli-hike checks in. A journey that long leaves no time to hike the day you arrive, so book the heli-hike for the next morning and keep a spare day after it.
None of the tours on this site flies from Queenstown to Fox. The only Queenstown departure we cover is the fly-in heli-hike day, which uses a plane to reach Franz Josef and a helicopter only for the short hop onto the ice there. Fox does have a small aerodrome, used by the helicopter and scenic flight operators, and two Fox flights with a snow landing leave from the township. See Fox Glacier helicopter flights.
Flying weather has to hold in Queenstown, over the Alps and at Franz Josef. One reviewer's glacier walk was cancelled for low cloud after the flight across, though the scenic flight went ahead. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before but does not say how the price changes if only the hike is cancelled, so ask True South Flights before you book.
The fly-in day is not suitable for children under 10, anyone under 30 kg or over 115 kg, people with mobility impairments or anyone with low fitness. You give everyone's full name and approximate weight when you book. The Fox heli-hike sold on GetYourGuide takes children from age 9, is not suitable for anyone over about 115 kg, and needs reasonable fitness.
Fly in if you have one day, no car, and want the flight over the Alps as part of it. Drive if you want Fox Glacier itself, up to 3 hours on the ice and a second chance at the weather: the Fox heli-hike is $651 less per person, but the trip costs you about two days. Our Fox or Franz Josef guide compares the two glaciers.
At least two. Arrive on day one, book the heli-hike for the first full day, and keep the day after free in case the weather cancels it. Fox Glacier Guiding advises booking your first day in town, makes its weather call 10 minutes before the 8:50 am or 11:50 am departure, and refunds a cancelled trip in full. See where to stay in Fox Glacier.
It is not realistic. The drive takes roughly four and a half hours each way before stops, and the heli-hike takes up to 4 hours from check-in, with departures at 8:50 am and 11:50 am. That leaves no margin for the weather, which can cancel a flight at short notice. Stay at least two nights in Fox, or take the fly-in day to Franz Josef if you only have one day.
The listing asks for 3 to 4 warm layers, shorts or light trousers (no jeans), sunglasses, closed-toe shoes and any daily medication, plus sunscreen, a small water bottle and a packed lunch. Crampons, waterproof jacket and pants are supplied. Everything you carry on the ice fits in a 2-litre waist bag provided, and lockers at the Glacier Base Building hold the rest.
