The Fox Glacier heli-hike in December
December is early summer at Fox Glacier: long days, busy Christmas weeks and rain in any week. When to book the heli-hike, what it costs and what to do if it is canceled.
Book the December heli-hike about a month ahead, put it on your first full day in Fox and keep the next day free. The Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice runs at 8:50am and 11:50am in December as in every month, from $483 per person, rated 4.9 from 372 GetYourGuide reviews, with a full refund if the weather stops it.
December brings long days for a South Island road trip, the busiest weeks of the year around Christmas and New Year, and rain, low cloud and wind that can ground the helicopters on any day. Tourism New Zealand’s listing says the operator is closed on Christmas Day; confirm with Fox Glacier Guiding before you plan around 25 December.

Can you do the Fox Glacier heli-hike in December?
Yes. Fox Glacier Guiding runs its Flying Fox heli-hike all year when the weather allows: a helicopter flight up to the glacier, a guided walk on the ice in crampons, and a flight back down. The whole trip takes up to 4 hours, with up to 3 hours on the ice when conditions allow.
What the Flying Fox involves:
- Duration: up to 4 hours from check-in to the finish.
- Time on the glacier: up to 3 hours, weather permitting.
- Minimum age: 9; children aged 9 to 16 must come with an adult.
- Fitness: moderate.
- Glacier experience: none needed.
- Starting point: Fox Glacier Guiding, 44 Main Road, Fox Glacier township.
- Check-in: 20 minutes before departure.
The operator lists departures at 8:50am and 11:50am, with extra departures when demand allows, and gives no separate December timetable. Use the booking calendar for your exact date, because holiday weeks can fill. The operator’s own rate is NZ$849 per person, valid to 30 September 2027, so it covers December 2026 as well; the cost section below compares it with the GetYourGuide price.
What is the weather like at Fox Glacier in December?
December is the first month of summer in New Zealand. The days are long and the village can feel mild, but Fox Glacier sits on the West Coast, where the weather turns quickly and rain falls in every month. Modelled 1991 to 2020 averages for the township (Open-Meteo data, via weather-nz.nz) give December an average high of about 18 °C (64 °F), an average low of about 11 °C (52 °F) and about 390 mm of rain over about 20 rainy days. So in December you should expect wet days, and plan to get more than one try at the heli-hike.
On the ice it is colder than in the village. Fox Glacier Guiding gives about +5 to +15 °C (41 to 59 °F) on the glacier in summer and says the weather can change in any season.
The village forecast tells you less than you might hope. A fine morning on Main Road does not mean a helicopter can land high on the glacier, and light rain in town does not cancel the trip by itself. The pilots weigh cloud, wind and visibility along the route and at the landing site, and Fox Glacier Guiding makes the final call 10 minutes before departure, after you have checked in.
What to plan for on a December trip
| What to plan for | Why it matters on a heli-hike |
|---|---|
| Mild or warm weather in the village | You can feel warm at check-in and cold once you are on the ice. |
| Cold air and wind on the ice | Layers, gloves and a warm hat still matter in December. |
| Rain or passing showers | The operator decides whether it is safe to fly and to walk on the ice. |
| Low cloud or poor visibility | The flight can be delayed or canceled even when it is barely raining. |
| Strong sun and glare off the ice | Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. |
| Weather that changes within hours | A spare day helps you more than picking a “clear” date weeks ahead. |
The operator decides on the day whether each departure flies. Check a New Zealand forecast in the days before you arrive, then turn up for check-in unless the operator tells you the trip is off.
Is early December better than late December?
No week in December has a dependable weather edge over another. The difference you will feel is how busy it is. Late December brings Christmas and the start of the New Zealand summer holidays, so moving to another departure or finding a room for an extra night gets harder.
Choose the week that fits the rest of your trip. If you are flying in from overseas on fixed dates, a second day in Fox is worth more than trying to guess a clear morning weeks in advance.
Is the Fox Glacier heli-hike open at Christmas?
Tourism New Zealand’s listing for the Flying Fox heli-hike says the operator is closed on Christmas Day. Fox Glacier Guiding’s own pages do not say either way, so confirm with Fox Glacier Guiding before you plan a heli-hike for 25 December 2026.
For 24 and 26 December and New Year’s Eve, check the booking calendar for the departures on your exact date. A heli-hike that runs all year does not tell you which departures run on each holiday.
Christmas planning checklist
- Pick a date other than 25 December, and check availability for the year you are traveling.
- Book earlier for late December. Holiday dates leave less room to switch departures than the quieter weeks.
- Keep a backup day. Put the heli-hike before your last morning in Fox Glacier.
- Confirm where you check in. The Flying Fox starts at the base in the township; you do not drive to the glacier.
- Plan meals and supplies. Restaurants, shops and transport can keep holiday hours.
- Check other operators one by one. A scenic helicopter company can keep different Christmas hours from Fox Glacier Guiding, and a scenic flight is not a guided walk on the glacier.
What happens on a December heli-hike
You start at Fox Glacier Guiding’s base in the township. After check-in, the team fits you with the supplied kit and briefs you, then a short ride takes you to the helicopter. The flight goes up over the lower glacier and lands on a section of ice that guided groups can reach.
On the ice, your guide helps you fit crampons and leads the walk, cutting steps where needed. You can walk past blue ice, ridges and crevasses, and the guide picks the route for that day’s conditions.
Do not book expecting one particular ice cave. Fox Glacier changes all the time, and the operator says individual features cannot be guaranteed. Photos from another season may show a landscape that is no longer there.
Another flight and the ride back bring you to the base. The trip takes up to 4 hours, and weather and safety calls can stretch or shorten it, so do not book a fixed onward drive or another paid trip straight afterwards.
What to wear on Fox Glacier in December
Dress for the ice, which is colder than the village. Expect cold wind, rain and bright sun reflecting off the glacier.
Fox Glacier Guiding supplies leather boots, socks, crampons, walking poles, a waterproof jacket, overtrousers, a hat, gloves and a small backpack for the trip. Bring three to four warm upper-body layers, sunglasses, sun protection, any medication you need, water and a small snack.
December packing list
- A moisture-wicking base layer.
- Warm mid-layers you can add or take off.
- Comfortable pants to wear under the supplied overtrousers.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen.
- A small water bottle and a snack.
- Any medication you need.
- A camera, within the operator’s equipment rules.
Leave jeans behind: the operator advises against them. Its packing list also keeps drones, spare batteries and power banks, smoking products and personal backpacks off the glacier trip. Check the current restrictions when you book, because battery and aircraft rules can change. Our what to wear guide covers each layer.
Morning or late-morning heli-hike in December?
If both departures have space, the 8:50am leaves you more room in the day: time for Lake Matheson or a walk later, and a chance to move to the 11:50am if the first slot is canceled. Glacier Helicopters, a separate scenic-flight operator, gives similar advice for its own flights and suggests booking your first day in town.
The morning slot does not come with better weather. Some days clear later, others close in, and there is no dependable pattern of clearer mornings at Fox.
| Your situation | How to book |
|---|---|
| Staying two nights | Your first full day, with the next morning kept free. |
| Driving in from Wānaka or Queenstown | Not the same day as a long drive in; take the next morning. |
| Staying only one night | A slot you can reach without rushing, knowing a cancellation may end your chance. |
| Traveling over Christmas or New Year | A confirmed departure, booked early, with the holiday dates checked. |
| Traveling with younger children | A time that suits the family’s energy; check the minimum age of 9. |
How far ahead to book a December heli-hike
Book as soon as your Fox dates are firm, especially for the second half of December or for a family group. Glacier Helicopters counts November to March as its busiest months and suggests booking about a month ahead then. No operator says how many days ahead each departure sells out, because group sizes, helicopter loads and weather all vary.
The booking calendar shows what is free. Before you pay, also check:
- that everyone in your group meets the age and fitness rules
- whether you are booking direct or through a reseller such as GetYourGuide
- what happens if the weather stops the flight
- whether you can change the date, and on what terms
- that the price covers everything in the itinerary
Our Fox Glacier heli-hike price guide compares the direct rate with the GetYourGuide price before you pick a departure.
How much the Fox Glacier heli-hike costs in December
December costs the same as the rest of the year. Fox Glacier Guiding’s rate is NZ$849 per person for adults and for children aged 9 to 16, valid until 30 September 2027, and a family deal for two adults and two children costs NZ$3,050. On GetYourGuide, the Flying Fox heli-hike starts at $483 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
You pay for the time on the ice, two helicopter flights, the technical kit and the guide. If you only want to see the glacier from the air, the Fox Glacier: Scenic Helicopter Flight with Snow Landing takes 25 minutes and costs from $225 per person, rated 4.7 from 129 reviews. If you want to walk on the ice with a guide, the heli-hike is the trip to book.
Fox Glacier Guiding also sells two heli-hikes direct that are not on GetYourGuide: the Fox Glacier Express, a shorter trip with up to 1 hour on the ice, and the Extreme Fox, a full day for fit hikers. Check whether either runs on your December date, and see Express, Flying Fox and Extreme Fox compared to weigh them against the standard trip.
What happens if your December heli-hike is canceled?
Weather cancellations are part of planning any helicopter trip at Fox, and you often will not know until you have checked in.
Under Fox Glacier Guiding’s direct-booking terms for the Flying Fox, you pay nothing when the operator cancels for weather: you get a full refund or a move to another departure with space. If you cancel a direct booking at least 24 hours before reporting time, you pay nothing; cancel later, or do not show up, and you pay 100%. On GetYourGuide, you can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund, and a weather cancellation is refunded in full through GetYourGuide.
If the operator cancels, ask for every remaining departure during your stay, not only the next one. The tour refund will not cover non-refundable rooms or transport you booked around it, so check your travel insurance for those separately.
Our weather and best-time guide walks through the weather call and refunds in more detail.
Where to stay for a December heli-hike
Staying in Fox Glacier township is the simplest choice for the 8:50am: you walk to check-in with no early drive, and Lake Matheson is about 5 km away.
Franz Josef is the other base, about 24 km north, roughly 25 minutes on State Highway 6. It suits you if you are visiting both glacier towns or comparing their glacier trips; leave time for the drive to Fox’s check-in.
If the heli-hike is the reason you came, stay two nights rather than one. That gives you a second chance if the first day is canceled. Two nights never guarantee a flight, but a single short stop leaves you very little margin. Our where to stay in Fox Glacier page covers the bases.
A flexible two-night December plan
Arrival day: Drive to Fox Glacier, check in to your room and keep the afternoon easy. Walk around Lake Matheson if the weather and daylight allow.
Full day: Take the booked heli-hike, weather permitting, and leave the rest of the day open. If the trip is canceled, ask the operator about later departures that day or the next morning.
Departure day: Keep the morning flexible in case you need a replacement slot. If the heli-hike flew the day before, take a short walk or set off as planned.
Do not book a long onward drive straight after a morning slot if you might want to rebook the same day.
Things to do near Fox Glacier if the helicopters cannot fly
A canceled heli-hike still leaves you rainforest, lakes, rivers, mountains and coast to explore on the West Coast.
Lake Matheson / Te Ara Kairaumati
The Department of Conservation (DOC) gives the full loop as 4.4 km, about 1 hour 30 minutes. The lake is known for mirror reflections of the mountains, which DOC says are best at dawn and dusk on a fine, windless day. On a wet or windy day you still get the rainforest walk, without the reflections. The Lake Matheson Half-Day Nature Tour near Fox Glacier takes 4 hours with a local guide, rain or shine, from $68, rated 4.8 from only 18 reviews, so read them before you book.
Fox Glacier South Side Walkway
This DOC track follows the south bank of the Fox River through rainforest, about 40 minutes to the first viewpoint of the glacier, which stays hundreds of meters away. Check DOC’s track status before you go, especially after heavy rain, and stop at the sign that marks the end of the track. It is a valley walk, not a route onto the glacier.
Lake Gault Track
For a longer walk, the Lake Gault Track starts at the Lake Matheson car park and climbs about 200 m through forest to a lookout. The mountain views need clear weather, so save it for a dry day, with sturdy footwear and rain gear.
Gillespies Beach
For a different side of the West Coast, drive out to Gillespies Beach on the coast. Check the road and the weather before you go, particularly in a campervan.
The Fox Glacier: Half-Day Walking & Nature Tour with Local Guide is another option on a grounded day: 3.5 hours in a group of up to 10, from $65 per person, rated 4.7 from 189 reviews, with rain gear supplied.
The weather that grounds the helicopters can also make walks and roads unsafe. Check DOC track alerts and the NZ Transport Agency road map before you set out.
Fox Glacier or Franz Josef in December
Both glacier towns sit on many South Island road trips. Choose by the tour you want, the town you are sleeping in and which one has space on your dates.
The Fox Flying Fox gives you up to 3 hours on the ice from age 9. The Franz Josef heli-hike gives you about 2 to 2.5 hours on the ice from age 10, from $511 per person, rated 4.7 from 408 reviews. Neither glacier can promise better weather on your December day.
If you want Fox specifically, staying in Fox keeps the morning simple. If you are still choosing, our Fox Glacier or Franz Josef heli-hike guide sets the two side by side.
Is Fox Glacier worth it in December?
If you are happy with moderate walking and can live with a possible weather cancellation, December is a good month for the heli-hike. You get the flight up, hours of guided walking on the ice and a close look at a glacier that changes every season.
It suits you less if your schedule is tight, you cannot move a booking at short notice, you are uneasy in helicopters or you do not meet the fitness rules. On a tighter budget, the 25-minute snow-landing flight at $225 gives you the view and a few minutes on the snow.
For December: book a confirmed date, choose a room you can extend, keep a spare day and check the holiday dates on the booking calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Is December a good month for a Fox Glacier heli-hike?
Yes. The heli-hike runs year-round, and December fits a New Zealand summer road trip. The West Coast weather still changes quickly, and cloud or wind can ground the helicopters, so keep a spare day.
Can you heli-hike Fox Glacier on Christmas Day?
Tourism New Zealand’s listing says the operator is closed on Christmas Day. Fox Glacier Guiding’s own pages do not say, so confirm with the operator before you plan around 25 December.
Is Fox Glacier busy in December?
Yes, especially in the second half of the month. December is inside Glacier Helicopters’ busiest months, November to March, when it suggests booking about a month ahead. Book your room and the heli-hike early.
Is it cold on the glacier in December?
It can be, even when the village is mild. Fox Glacier Guiding gives about +5 to +15 °C on the ice in summer. Wear warm layers under the supplied jacket and overtrousers, and bring sunglasses and sunscreen.
Do I need hiking experience for the Fox Glacier heli-hike?
No. The Flying Fox needs no glacier experience, but it does need moderate fitness. Your guide fits your crampons and leads the route.
How old do children have to be?
At least 9. Children aged 9 to 16 must come with an adult. Check that each child is fit enough for up to 3 hours on the ice.
Does light rain mean my heli-hike will be canceled?
No. Fox Glacier Guiding still operates in the rain and makes the call on cloud, wind and conditions on the ice. Turn up for check-in unless the operator tells you the trip is off.
How much does a Fox Glacier heli-hike cost in December 2026?
The same as the rest of the year: NZ$849 per person booked direct, valid to 30 September 2027, or from $483 per person on GetYourGuide. A family deal for two adults and two children costs NZ$3,050 direct.
Is a morning heli-hike better in December?
The 8:50am gives you more of the day to rebook if it is canceled, but it does not come with better weather. Choose the slot that fits your plans.
Should I spend one or two nights in Fox Glacier?
Two nights if the heli-hike is a top priority, because a second day gives you another try after a weather cancellation. With one night, book knowing that a cancellation may end your chance.
