The Fox Glacier heli-hike in February
February is late summer at Fox Glacier: the driest month of summer on paper, Waitangi Day on 6 February and fewer school-holiday families. When to book the heli-hike, what it costs and what to do if it is canceled.
February is still summer at Fox Glacier, with less rain than January on average and fewer families once the schools go back. Book the heli-hike a few weeks ahead, take your first full day in the village and keep the next one spare. The Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice departs at 8:50am and 11:50am, from $483 per person, rated 4.9 from 372 GetYourGuide reviews, with a full refund if the weather stops it.
The one busy date to watch is Waitangi Day. It falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 and is observed on Monday 8 February, so New Zealanders get a long weekend and the West Coast fills up. Cloud and wind can still ground the helicopters on any February morning, even one that looks fine from Main Road.

What is Fox Glacier like in February?
February is the last month of New Zealand’s summer. Modelled 1991 to 2020 averages for the township (Open-Meteo data, via weather-nz.nz) give it an average high of about 20 °C (68 °F) and an average low of about 12 °C (54 °F), level with January. It has about 281 mm of rain and about 14 rainy days, against about 384 mm and 17 days in January. The figures describe the village and cannot tell you what your booking day will bring.
Plan for two places:
- Fox Glacier township: mild, often humid and sometimes wet, with green rainforest and comfortable weather for the walks near the village.
- The glacier: colder and exposed. Fox Glacier Guiding gives about +5 to +15 °C (41 to 59 °F) on the ice in summer, and wind, cloud and fresh snow matter far more than the temperature at your motel.
A warm afternoon in the village does not mean a T-shirt on the ice. Dress in layers and follow your guide’s kit instructions.
Does February have better weather than January?
Drier on paper, yes: about a quarter less rain and three fewer rainy days in the modelled averages. That does not mean more heli-hikes fly in February. The pilots decide on cloud height, visibility and wind at the landing sites, and a month with fewer wet days can still bring three grey mornings in a row.
If your dates are flexible, February is a sensible pick for a summer trip. Choose your exact days by how many spare nights you can fit, not by trying to guess a dry week.
Can a February heli-hike be canceled?
Yes. Fox Glacier Guiding says the weather and cloud can change within minutes and makes the final call 10 minutes before departure, after you have checked in. No month guarantees a flight.
That is why two nights in the glacier region work better than driving in for one fixed slot and leaving straight after.
What happens on a February Fox Glacier heli-hike
The trip itself is the same in February as in any month: check in at 44 Main Road 20 minutes before departure, collect your boots and crampons, fly up, walk with a guide for up to 3 hours and fly back down, up to 4 hours in all. Our January guide sets out the full trip details.
The ice changes week to week, and the features of the day may include blue ice, sculpted ridges and crevasses, but no cave, arch or tunnel can be promised in advance.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes. The Flying Fox needs no glacier experience, only moderate fitness: you walk on uneven, icy ground and follow the guide’s instructions. The minimum age is 9, and children aged 9 to 16 must come with an adult.
If you are unsure about mobility, balance, a health condition or a child’s ability, contact Fox Glacier Guiding before you book, while you can still cancel for free.
Which Fox Glacier tour should you book in February?
Not every helicopter trip includes a hike. Decide how long you want on the ice before you pay.
| Trip | Time | Best for | Where to book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flying Fox heli-hike | Up to 4 hours; up to 3 hours on the ice | First-time visitors who want a proper glacier walk | Our pick on GetYourGuide: from $483, 4.9 from 372 reviews |
| Fox Glacier Express heli-hike | Up to 2 hours; up to 1 hour on the ice | A shorter guided walk on the ice | Fox Glacier Guiding direct, NZ$749 (not on GetYourGuide) |
| Extreme Fox heli-hike | Up to 8 hours; up to 7 hours on the ice | Fit hikers who want a full day on the glacier | Fox Glacier Guiding direct, NZ$1,049 (not on GetYourGuide) |
| Scenic helicopter flight with snow landing | 25 minutes | Mountain views and a short stop on the snow, no long walk | Our pick on GetYourGuide: from $225, 4.7 from 129 reviews |
The minimum age is 9 for the Flying Fox and the Express, and 13 for the Extreme Fox, which also asks for a good level of fitness. It is a long day on the ice and suits fewer people than the Flying Fox.
Choose by your goal. To walk on the glacier, book a guided heli-hike. To see the ice and the Southern Alps from above without hours of walking, book the scenic flight. Our Express, Flying Fox and Extreme Fox compared guide weighs the three heli-hikes, and which Fox Glacier tour to book puts the hike against the flights.
How much does a Fox Glacier heli-hike cost in February 2027?
Fox Glacier Guiding’s 2026-27 rates for the Flying Fox are valid until 30 September 2027, so they cover February 2027:
| Booking | Direct price (NZD) |
|---|---|
| Flying Fox heli-hike, adult | NZ$849 |
| Flying Fox heli-hike, child aged 9 to 16 | NZ$849 |
| Family package, 2 adults and 2 children aged 9 to 16 | NZ$3,050 |
The family package saves NZ$346 on four single tickets at NZ$849. It is sold direct only, so confirm that your dates and group meet its conditions before you book. On GetYourGuide the Flying Fox heli-hike starts at $483 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
Check the Express, the Extreme Fox and the scenic flights against the live product and date, because prices and timetables can change. A flight with a snow landing does not include a guided walk on the ice, whatever the price.
Is February cheaper than January?
No. The operator publishes one Flying Fox price for the whole season, with no February discount. If a reseller or package shows a different rate, compare the total at checkout, the cancellation terms and what is included, not only the headline price.
What is included?
For the Flying Fox, Fox Glacier Guiding supplies leather boots, socks, crampons, walking poles, a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, a hat, gloves and a small pack. Bring your own base and mid layers, sunscreen, water, a snack and any medication you need. Our price guide sets the direct and GetYourGuide prices side by side.
What to wear on Fox Glacier in February
The usual summer mistake is dressing for the village. Layers matter on the ice even when the forecast is sunny.
Bring:
- Three or four warm upper-body layers you can add and remove.
- Comfortable trousers or leggings for walking; leave jeans behind, because they get cold and heavy when wet.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen, since the snow and ice reflect strong light.
- Water, a small snack and any medication you need.
- A phone or camera, within the operator’s rules.
The operator supplies the outer layers and boots for the Flying Fox. Your pack can weigh no more than 3 kg, so leave the big daypack at your room. Drones, spare batteries and power banks stay behind.
Fox Glacier Guiding asks you to carry any medication you could need if cloud delays the return flight. A long wait on the glacier is rare, but the operator plans for it, so follow the safety briefing over any generic packing list. Our what to wear on the Fox Glacier heli-hike guide has the full list.
Is morning or late morning better in February?
Fox Glacier Guiding lists 8:50am and 11:50am Flying Fox departures all year, with extra departures on demand. Once the schools are back, you are more likely than in January to find both open on your date.
The weather does not favor either time at Fox. Choose by what else you want from the day:
- The 8:50am leaves the afternoon for Lake Matheson or the drive on, and leaves the 11:50am as a fallback if the first slot is delayed.
- The 11:50am suits a drive in from Franz Josef or a slow breakfast, but a delay eats into your afternoon.
- Your first full day in Fox is the best day to book either, because it leaves time to rebook after a cancellation.
Over the Waitangi weekend, 6 to 8 February 2027, expect January-style competition for both slots.
When should you book a February heli-hike?
Book once your Fox Glacier dates are fixed. A few weeks ahead is usually enough for most of February. Book earlier for the Waitangi Day long weekend, 6 to 8 February 2027, and for the first days of the month, while some schools are still on holiday.
The operator recommends booking ahead and suggests your first day in Fox Glacier, because the trip depends on the weather. Booking ahead does not guarantee a flight, or a new slot before you leave town after a cancellation.
Before you book, check:
- Which trip you are buying: the Flying Fox, the Express, the Extreme Fox or a scenic flight.
- The total time: check-in, kit and transfers on top of the time on the ice.
- Who can go: minimum age, fitness and any weight or medical limits.
- The cancellation terms, especially if you book through GetYourGuide or another reseller.
- Your spare time: at least one extra morning or afternoon in the region.
Our Fox Glacier heli-hike breakdown goes through the GetYourGuide listing and its departure options.
What happens if the weather cancels your February trip?
When Fox Glacier Guiding calls off a direct booking before the trip for weather, safety or operational reasons, you get a full refund or a move to another departure with space. Refunds go back to the card you paid with; exchange rates and bank fees can change what lands in your home currency.
The rules change if you cancel:
- For a direct Flying Fox booking, cancel at least 24 hours before reporting time and you pay nothing.
- Cancel inside 24 hours, or do not show up, and you pay 100% of the price.
- The operator can run trips in the rain. Deciding yourself that the weather looks poor is not an operator cancellation.
On GetYourGuide you can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund, and a weather cancellation is refunded in full through GetYourGuide. Booked through someone else? Read the terms on your voucher before you change anything.
The pilots and guides make the safety call. Never walk onto the glacier ice on your own to make up for a canceled trip; the valley tracks stop well short of the ice for a reason. Fox Glacier Guiding’s full terms and conditions set out the rules.
A two-night Fox Glacier plan for February
Two nights give you time for the heli-hike and take the pressure off a single weather-dependent slot. Adjust the plan to your driving direction.
Day 1: Arrive, explore and get ready
With fewer school-holiday visitors after the first week, rooms are usually easier to find than in January, except over the Waitangi weekend. Arrive in daylight, confirm your check-in time, and walk the Lake Matheson loop if the evening is calm.
The West Coast road is long and narrow in places, so do not plan the heli-hike for the day you drive in.
Day 2: Heli-hike day
Take the 8:50am if it has space; in mid-February the 11:50am may still have seats as a same-day fallback. If both are canceled, ask about the next morning. Another operator’s flight only helps if that operator confirms it is flying and has seats; a cloudy day often grounds every helicopter in the area.
Day 3: Backup slot and the drive on
February has fewer rainy days on average than January, about 14 against 17, so a second morning gives you a slightly better spread of chances, though never a promise. Leave enough time before your onward drive.
Two nights improve your chances; they cannot promise the weather will let you fly.
Our where to stay in Fox Glacier page compares the village with Franz Josef as a base.
What else can you do near Fox Glacier in February?
If your flight is canceled, the region still has plenty for a day, as long as the tracks and roads are open.
Lake Matheson
The lake is known for reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman on calm, clear mornings. Cloud can hide the mountains, so the reflections are never certain. The Lake Matheson Half-Day Nature Tour near Fox Glacier adds a local guide, from $68 per person, rated 4.8 from 18 reviews; that is a short review record, so read a few before you book.
Glacier viewpoints and the valley
The Fox Glacier South Side Walkway and the valley viewpoints show the glacier from below. Check the Department of Conservation (DOC) track alerts before you set out, because floods and rockfall can close tracks after heavy rain.
Franz Josef township
Franz Josef is about 24 km north, with cafes, places to stay and its own guided trips. If your Fox trip is canceled, check what runs there, but do not expect better weather 25 minutes up the road.
Scenic helicopter flight
If you do not want a long walk on the ice, a scenic flight or snow landing is a different trip. It still depends on the weather, so it is grounded on many of the same days.
Is Fox Glacier better than Franz Josef in February?
February changes nothing between the two: the same weather reaches both towns. For families, the age limits matter more. The Flying Fox takes children from 9 and offers the NZ$3,050 family package direct; the Franz Josef heli-hike starts at age 10, with about 2 to 2.5 hours on the ice against up to 3 hours at Fox, from $511 per person, rated 4.7 from 408 reviews.
If your route already passes Fox, stay there and keep a spare slot. If you are still choosing a base, compare rooms and the trip you most want; neither village has more flyable days. Our Fox Glacier or Franz Josef heli-hike guide sets the two side by side.
Who should book a February Fox Glacier heli-hike?
February suits you if you:
- Want a glacier walk as part of a summer South Island road trip.
- Can manage a moderate guided walk on uneven ice.
- Are happy to pay for a helicopter-access trip.
- Have some slack if the flying weather turns.
- Accept that the guide picks the route on the day.
Look at another trip if you:
- Have only a few fixed hours and cannot absorb a delay or cancellation.
- Do not want to fly in a helicopter.
- Want as little walking as possible; the scenic flight may suit you better.
- Cannot meet the age, fitness or safety rules.
- Expect a particular ice cave or a photo you saw online.
Frequently asked questions
Is February a good time to visit Fox Glacier?
Yes. February is late summer, and the heli-hikes run as usual. It is drier than January on average, but mountain weather can still ground the helicopters on any day.
Can you walk on Fox Glacier in February?
Yes, on a guided heli-hike when the weather allows. The Flying Fox flies you to the ice and a guide leads the walk. The valley tracks do not give you access to the glacier itself.
Does the glacier melt in February?
The surface melts in summer and the ice keeps moving, so the features change. The tours keep running; guides adapt the route to what the ice is doing that week.
Is Fox Glacier cold in February?
The village is usually mild, about 20 °C on an average afternoon. On the ice it is about +5 to +15 °C and can be windy, so bring several warm layers. The operator supplies boots, waterproofs and crampons.
What is the minimum age for a Fox Glacier heli-hike?
Nine for the Flying Fox and the Express, with an adult for children aged 9 to 16. The Extreme Fox starts at 13.
How far in advance should I book in February?
As soon as your dates are fixed, and earlier for the Waitangi Day weekend. The operator publishes no set number of weeks.
Is Fox Glacier busy on Waitangi Day?
Expect a busy weekend. Waitangi Day is Saturday 6 February 2027, observed on Monday 8 February, so many New Zealanders travel that weekend. Book the heli-hike and your room early if your trip falls on those dates.
Will rain cancel my heli-hike?
Not always. The operator runs trips in rain. The call depends on visibility, wind and cloud on the route, not rain alone.
Do I get a refund if the helicopter cannot fly?
For a direct booking, if Fox Glacier Guiding cancels before the trip for weather or operational reasons, you get a full refund or a move to another slot. GetYourGuide refunds weather cancellations in full. Check other sellers’ terms.
Is February better than December or January?
No month is dependably better for flying. February has drier averages and fewer school-holiday crowds than January, but all three months bring rain and low cloud. A spare day helps more than the month you pick.
Is a Fox Glacier heli-hike worth the cost in February?
If you want time on the ice with a guide, yes. If you mainly want the view from above, the 25-minute snow-landing flight at $225 costs less than half as much. Our is the Fox Glacier heli-hike worth it guide covers the reviews.
Booking a February heli-hike at Fox Glacier
If walking on a glacier is high on your South Island list, February is a good month to do it. You get summer days, drier averages than January and an easier booking calendar after the first week.
The weather is the part you cannot control. Book early enough to get your slot, put the trip near the start of your stay and leave room for a second try. For the peak weeks before, see our Fox Glacier heli-hike in January guide, and for the Christmas weeks the December heli-hike guide.
