Fox Glacier heli-hike price: what you pay and what you get
The Fox Glacier heli-hike costs from $483 per person on GetYourGuide. See what the price covers, 11 tours priced side by side, and where real deals exist.
The Fox Glacier heli-hike costs from $483 per person on GetYourGuide, checked in October 2026 on a real bookable date. For that you get about 4 hours with Fox Glacier Guiding: two short helicopter flights, a guide, boots, crampons and waterproofs, and up to 3 hours walking on Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe), depending on the weather. The Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice is the only Fox Glacier heli-hike sold on GetYourGuide, and it is rated 4.9 from 370 GetYourGuide reviews.
Book direct and you pay in New Zealand dollars: Fox Glacier Guiding publishes the same trip, which it calls the Flying Fox Heli Hike, at NZ$849 for adults and NZ$849 for children aged 9 to 16. Either way, a cancellation for weather is refunded in full, so the money you commit is safe if the helicopter cannot fly.

What the $483 covers, and what you pay for yourself
The GetYourGuide listing includes two helicopter flights, an expert guide, ground transport between the base and the helipad, leather boots and socks, crampons, walking poles, and a wet-weather jacket with overtrousers (rain pants). Fox Glacier Guiding’s own page adds a warm hat, gloves and a small backpack, and the company lends a fleece free if you need an extra layer. You do not need to buy or rent any glacier kit before you arrive.
The day itself runs from 44 Main Road in Fox Glacier township. You check in 20 minutes before your departure, sit through a safety briefing of about half an hour, take a 5-minute bus ride and a 5-minute flight onto the ice, and spend up to 3 hours walking with your guide before the flight and bus back. The “up to” matters: the time on the ice depends on the weather on the day, and the price stays the same.
Three things sit outside the price. There is no hotel pickup, so you make your own way to Main Road, about 25 minutes by car from Franz Josef. Food and drinks are not included; bring a snack and water within the 3 kg limit of the supplied pack. And because helicopters at Fox cancel at short notice for cloud, wind and rain, budget for a spare night in the area in case you need the next day. Our where to stay in Fox Glacier page covers the options.
Booking on GetYourGuide or directly with Fox Glacier Guiding
The two prices describe one product in two currencies: GetYourGuide shows US dollars and Fox Glacier Guiding quotes New Zealand dollars. To compare them, convert at your card’s exchange rate on the day you book; the gap between the two numbers is mostly the currency, not a discount.
The terms differ a little. On GetYourGuide you can reserve now and pay later, and you can cancel up to 24 hours before the trip for a full refund. The listing also states that guest-requested changes or cancellations inside 24 hours get no refund, and Fox Glacier Guiding’s direct terms match that: free cancellation at least 24 hours before departure, 100% charged inside 24 hours. If the company cancels for weather, you get a full refund on either route, and a direct booking can also move to another departure if one has space. If you booked through GetYourGuide, the refund comes back through GetYourGuide, since operators do not process refunds for third-party bookings.
The heli-hike runs at 8:50am and 11:50am all year; the GetYourGuide price above is for the 11:50 departure.
Families are the one group with a clear reason to book direct. Fox Glacier Guiding sells a family price of NZ$3,050 for two adults and two children aged 9 to 16, which is NZ$346 less than four single fares at NZ$849. GetYourGuide shows no family rate on this listing. Everyone else can pick either: GetYourGuide for pay-later and one app for all bookings, direct to deal with the operator from the start.
Eleven glacier tours, cheapest to most expensive
Every price here is per person in US dollars on a real bookable date, checked in October 2026. “Time” is the duration GetYourGuide prints: flight time for the scenic flights, the whole outing for the hikes and walks.
| Tour | Starts in | Time | From (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fox Glacier: Half-Day Walking & Nature Tour | Franz Josef, or pickup in Fox | 3.5 hours | $65 |
| Lake Matheson Half-Day Nature Tour | Franz Josef, or pickup in Fox | 4 hours | $68 |
| Fox Glacier: Scenic Helicopter Flight with Snow Landing | Fox Glacier | 25 minutes | $225 |
| Twin Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers Helicopter Trip | Franz Josef | 30 minutes | $262 |
| Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers Helicopter Flight & Snow Landing | Franz Josef | 35 minutes | $281 |
| Fox Glacier and Mount Cook Helicopter Flight | Fox Glacier | 35 minutes | $281 |
| Franz Josef: Twin Glacier Helicopter Flight and Snow Landing | Franz Josef | 35 minutes | $281 |
| Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice | Fox Glacier | 4 hours | $483 |
| Franz Josef Glacier: 2.5-Hour Heli-Hike | Franz Josef | 4 to 8 hours | $511 |
| Franz Josef: Extended Heli-Hike with Lunch | Franz Josef | 8 hours | $881 |
| Queenstown: Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike & Scenic Flight | Queenstown | 6.5 hours | $1,134 |
Three price bands stand out. The two guided walks cost under $70 and never touch the ice: both stop at public viewpoints. The helicopter flights cost $225 to $281 and land on snow high on a glacier for about 8 to 10 minutes, weather permitting. The heli-hikes start at $483, and Fox is the lowest-priced of the four heli-hikes compared here. Three of the flights leave from Franz Josef, about 24 km north of Fox, so add the drive if you are staying in Fox. Our which tour to book guide compares all eleven by more than price.
The Franz Josef heli-hikes and what they cost
If you are weighing Fox against its neighbor, the closest match is the Franz Josef Glacier: 2.5-Hour Heli-Hike with Helicopter Transfer at $511, which is $28 more than Fox on GetYourGuide. Franz Josef Glacier Guides lists up to 2.5 hours on the ice against Fox’s up to 3 hours, and sets the minimum age at 10 against Fox’s 9. Direct, the gap is the same shape: Franz Josef Glacier Guides charges NZ$899, Fox Glacier Guiding NZ$849. The Franz Josef hike has the most reviews of the heli-hikes on this site, 4.7 from 404. See our breakdown of the Franz Josef heli-hike.
The Franz Josef: Extended Heli-Hike with Lunch (Small Group) costs $881, nearly double. For that, the listing gives up to about 5.5 hours on the ice, a maximum of four guests per guide and a picnic lunch on the glacier. It is not open to children under 14, and its 5.0 rating rests on a single review so far.
At the top of the range, the Queenstown: Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike & Scenic Flight costs $1,134 and is the only tour on this site that starts in Queenstown. You fly by plane to the West Coast and back, with a two-hour hike on Franz Josef Glacier in between and hotel pickup in Queenstown. It is a Franz Josef hike, not a Fox one; our Queenstown page sets it against driving to Fox. For the full side-by-side of the two glaciers, read Fox or Franz Josef heli-hike.
What moves the price up or down
Time on the ice sets the price at Fox. Fox Glacier Guiding sells several heli-hikes on its own site that GetYourGuide does not list, all in NZ dollars with prices valid until 30 September 2027:
- Fox Glacier Express: up to 2 hours in total and up to 1 hour on the ice, NZ$749, departing 7:50am.
- Flying Fox Heli Hike: up to 4 hours in total and up to 3 hours on the ice, NZ$849. This is the trip GetYourGuide sells.
- Extreme Fox All Day Heli Hike: up to 8 hours in total and up to 7 hours on the ice, NZ$1,049, minimum age 13 and a “good” fitness level, with short ice pitches and abseiling depending on conditions.
- Browne Fox Heli Trek: up to 9 hours, NZ$1,249, minimum age 13, run from 1 October to 31 March, with a climb of Chancellor Dome (2,004 m).
The step from the Express to the Flying Fox costs NZ$100 for up to two more hours on the ice, which makes the Flying Fox the better buy if your schedule allows the longer morning or midday slot. The Express suits you if you need to leave Fox by mid-morning.
Age does not change the price at Fox. Children aged 9 to 16 pay the full NZ$849 direct, and the GetYourGuide price is per person regardless of age. The family price above is the only reduction the operator publishes.
Season does not change it either. Fox Glacier Guiding quotes one price for the year, valid until 30 September 2027, and runs the heli-hike year-round.
Promo codes, discount codes and deals
No promo code is published for the Fox Glacier heli-hike on GetYourGuide, and Fox Glacier Guiding’s own pages list no discount code. Treat any code that does not appear on the operator’s own site with care. The savings that do exist are the family price for two adults and two children (NZ$3,050 direct) and GetYourGuide’s reserve-now-pay-later, which lets you hold a place without paying until closer to the date.
One Franz Josef helicopter company, Glacier Country Helicopters, has advertised percentage-off codes for direct bookings of its own flights. Those codes belong to that company’s scenic flights, and they do not apply to the Fox heli-hike.
Cheaper ways to see the glacier up close
If $483 is more than you want to spend, you can still stand on snow above Fox Glacier for less than half the price. The Fox Glacier: Scenic Helicopter Flight with Snow Landing costs $225 for about 25 minutes from Fox township, with a landing of about 8 minutes in the listing’s itinerary, in groups of up to 6. A couple of reviewers got a flyover with no landing because of the weather. Our Fox Glacier helicopter page compares the flights.
For under $70, the guided half-day walks from Glacier Valley Eco Tours take you to the public viewpoints with a guide and hot drinks, and pick you up in Fox. The Department of Conservation’s South Side Walkway costs nothing: about 40 minutes to the first viewpoint, hundreds of meters from the ice. Lake Matheson, about 5 km from the village, is a free 4.4 km loop. None of these puts you on the glacier itself; see our page on Fox Glacier without a helicopter.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Fox Glacier heli hike cost?
From $483 per person on GetYourGuide, checked in October 2026. Fox Glacier Guiding’s own price for the same trip is NZ$849 for adults and children aged 9 to 16. Both include the helicopter flights, the guide and the glacier kit.
Is there a Fox Glacier heli hike promo code?
None is published on GetYourGuide or on Fox Glacier Guiding’s site. The real saving is the operator’s family price, NZ$3,050 for two adults and two children aged 9 to 16 when you book direct.
Is it cheaper to book on GetYourGuide or direct?
For one adult the price is effectively the same: GetYourGuide’s $483 is the operator’s NZ$849 shown in US dollars. GetYourGuide adds pay-later booking; booking direct gives you the family price.
What is the cheapest way to stand on snow at Fox Glacier?
The 25-minute scenic flight with a snow landing from Fox township, from $225 per person. The landing depends on the weather and lasts a few minutes, and you do not walk on the glacier itself.
