Is the Fox Glacier heli-hike worth it?

Who the Fox Glacier heli-hike suits, what reviewers praise and criticize, value per hour against a 25-minute flight, safety, and Fox without the hike.

Updated October 2026

Yes, for most travelers who can walk for 3 hours on uneven ground and have a spare day in Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe) in case of weather. The Fox Glacier Heli-Hike: Up to 3 Hours on the Ice gives you about 4 hours with Fox Glacier Guiding, up to 3 of them walking on the glacier in crampons, from $483 per person. It is rated 4.9 from 370 GetYourGuide reviews, the highest rating of the heli-hikes on this site with more than 30 reviews.

It is a poorer fit if you have one night in Fox and a bad forecast, if a child in your group is under 9, if anyone weighs over about 115 kg, or if what you want is the view from above. For the view, a 25-minute flight with a snow landing costs $225 and leaves your afternoon free.

Verdict card: Fox Glacier heli-hike rated 4.9 from 370 GetYourGuide reviews, up to 3 hours on the ice, and who it suits

Who should book the heli-hike, and who should choose something else

Book it if this is your first time on a glacier and you want to walk on the ice as well as look at it. Since the valley road closed in 2019, a helicopter and a guide are the only way onto Fox Glacier, and this is the only Fox heli-hike sold on GetYourGuide. You need no experience. Fox Glacier Guiding asks for moderate fitness, and the listing describes the terrain as variable and reasonably challenging, with steps your guide cuts into the ice.

Families with children aged 9 or older can do it together. Children 9 to 16 must be with an adult, and they pay the same price as adults.

Think twice if your time is tight. The heli-hike needs a clear weather window, the operator makes the final call 10 minutes before departure, and no cancellation rate is published for Fox. With one night in town and rain forecast, you could lose the slot and leave without a rebooking. The advice from Fox Glacier Guiding and the GetYourGuide listing is the same: book your first day in Fox and keep the next day free.

Choose a flight instead if you have mobility limits, cannot manage hours of walking in crampons, or weigh more than the limit. The Fox Glacier: Scenic Helicopter Flight with Snow Landing leaves from Fox township, takes about 25 minutes and costs $225, and the Fox Glacier and Mount Cook Helicopter Flight adds views toward Aoraki/Mt Cook for $281. Both land on snow if the weather allows. If even a flight is out of reach, the guided walks and free viewpoint tracks show you the glacier from the valley; they are covered further down.

What reviewers praise and what they complain about

An average of 4.9 from 370 reviews means the large majority of reviewers gave the day five stars. Fox Glacier Guiding also says its Flying Fox Heli Hike was ranked first in Tripadvisor’s 2021 Travellers’ Choice “Best of the Best” awards; that is the operator’s claim, and it is a few years old.

The low-star feedback on this listing is thin. One three-star reviewer felt the time on the glacier was too short and the experience too limited. That fits the wording of the trip: up to 3 hours on the ice, depending on the weather, so on a marginal day your walk can be shorter than you pictured.

The wider complaints come from the helicopter trips at both glaciers, and they show you what can go wrong on any heli product here. On the twin-glacier flight from Franz Josef, many low-star reviews are about weather cancellations, some travelers were rebooked three or four times before giving up, and some waited weeks for refunds after a cancellation. On the Fox snow-landing flight, a couple of reviewers were disappointed when the landing became a flyover. On the Franz Josef heli-hike, one group was flown up and then brought straight back when conditions changed, and another reviewer found the actual walking much shorter than the advertised ice time, with long waits.

Two lessons follow. First, every helicopter booking at the glaciers depends on cloud, wind and rain, so build in a spare day and keep your confirmation email for any refund. Second, read “up to” literally: 3 hours is the most you will get.

Value per hour: the heli-hike against shorter options

The table below divides each price by its time. Times are the listings’ own figures; the per-hour numbers are simple arithmetic and assume the trip runs in full.

OptionFromTotal timeTime on ice or snowCost per hour of total time
Fox Glacier heli-hike$483about 4 hoursup to 3 hours on the iceabout $121
Franz Josef 2.5-hour heli-hike$511up to about 4 hoursup to 2.5 hours on the iceabout $128
Fox 25-minute flight with snow landing$22525 minutesabout 8 minutes on snowabout $540
Fox and Mount Cook flight$28135 minutesabout 10 minutes on snowabout $482
Fox Glacier half-day walk$653.5 hoursnone, viewpoints onlyabout $19

Per hour, the heli-hike costs about a quarter of what the flights cost, and you spend hours on the ice against minutes on the snow. The flights win on total spend and leave the rest of your day free. If you can only afford one, ask what you will remember. Walking among crevasses and ice formations with a guide is the heli-hike’s draw; a wide aerial view and a few minutes in the snow is the flight’s. Specific features such as ice caves cannot be guaranteed on any trip, because the glacier changes constantly.

How the weather changes the value

A heli-hike that does not fly costs you nothing on GetYourGuide: if Fox Glacier Guiding cancels for weather, you get a full refund. The cost is time. Rainfall at Fox Glacier township averages around 5 meters a year, and conditions in the township and on the ice can differ. Fox Glacier Guiding gives temperatures on the ice of about +5 to +15°C in summer and about -5 to +10°C in winter, with changeable weather in any season.

The operator also states that if helicopters cannot reach a group already on the ice, the group waits for a window, and the guides can camp on the glacier overnight with stored emergency supplies. Keep that in mind when you pack, and carry any medication you need.

Plan the trip so a weather day only shifts your plans: book the heli-hike for your first full day in Fox, keep the next day free, and have a walk lined up as the fallback. Our weather and best time guide covers seasons and cancellations in more detail.

Is the Fox Glacier heli-hike safe?

The accident most visitors ask about happened on 21 November 2015, when an AS350BA helicopter crashed on Fox Glacier and all seven people on board were killed. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) published its final report in May 2019. It found that the operator’s pilot training did not fully comply with Civil Aviation rules and that the Civil Aviation Authority had not intervened on significant non-compliances, and it recommended that the CAA independently review its past surveillance. A coroner’s report in 2022 recommended, among other measures, weighing passengers.

Today, weight is part of the booking. The GetYourGuide listing says the heli-hike is not suitable for people over about 115 kg, and heavier guests may have their trip cancelled. Fox Glacier Guiding asks every guest to read its Risk Disclosure Statement before booking, gives a safety briefing of about half an hour before the flight, fits you with crampons, and keeps you with a guide on the ice. The company’s site displays Qualmark Gold and Adventure Mark logos, and operators at the glaciers state that they meet New Zealand’s adventure activities regulations.

Two personal checks matter. If you are pregnant, Fox Glacier Guiding will not advise you personally and points out that Fox is about 200 km from the nearest maternity hospital and emergency department. And if you have a medical condition, tell the operator before the day.

Is Fox Glacier worth visiting without the heli-hike?

Yes, if you set your expectations. You cannot walk onto Fox Glacier without a helicopter and a guide. The valley access road was damaged by floods and a landslide in early 2019 and has been closed since, and no reopening has been announced. The glacier has also retreated: about 374 m between 2017 and 2022, to its shortest recorded length.

What you can do from the ground is still a good half-day. The Department of Conservation’s South Side Walkway starts 2 km south of the township, across the Fox River bridge; it takes about 40 minutes to the first viewpoint and another 10 minutes downhill to the last one, with views of the glacier from hundreds of meters away. Stay behind the barriers: two visitors died in 2009 after crossing them to reach the terminal face, and DOC marks the end of the track for flood hazard. Lake Matheson, about 5 km from the village, is a 4.4 km loop known for reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, best at dawn or dusk on a still day.

If you prefer company and local knowledge, the Fox Glacier: Half-Day Walking & Nature Tour costs $65 with pickup in Fox and goes no closer than the public viewpoint. See our page on Fox Glacier without a helicopter for the full set of walks.
