The Experience

The Heli-Hike You Are Staying For

A short flight onto Fox Glacier and up to 3 hours on the ice with a guide, weather permitting, from 44 Main Road in the township, from $483 per person.

Highlights

  • Up to 3 hours walking on Fox Glacier, weather permitting
  • A short helicopter flight each way between the helipad and the ice
  • Steps cut by your guide through crevassed and changing ice
  • Check-in at Fox Glacier Guiding's base on Main Road, in the township
  • Two set departures a day, 8:50 a.m. and 11:50 a.m., per the operator
  • Rated 4.9 from 370 GetYourGuide reviews

What's Included

  • Safety briefing and kit fitting at 44 Main Road
  • Ground transport between the base and the helipad
  • Two helicopter flights, onto the glacier and back
  • Expert local glacier guide
  • Leather boots, socks, crampons and walking poles
  • Waterproof jacket and overtrousers

How the Nights Fit Together

Four steps from arriving in Fox to walking back from the heli-hike.

  1. Book the heli-hike first

Pick the first full day of your stay for the heli-hike, as Fox Glacier Guiding and the listing both advise. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, so you can then book the room around that date.

  2. Sleep near Main Road

The heli-hike does not include hotel pickup. A room in the township means you walk to 44 Main Road; from the far end of Cook Flat Road or from Franz Josef you drive.

  3. Check in 20 minutes early

Departures leave at 8:50 am and 11:50 am. Fox Glacier Guiding makes the final weather call 10 minutes before departure, and a weather cancellation is refunded in full or moved to another departure if there is space.

  4. Keep the second day free

The trip lasts about 4 hours and ends back at 44 Main Road. If the weather won on day one, a second night gives you another chance at the ice.

Where to Stay

Fox Glacier Township, Cook Flat Road or Franz Josef

Three bases measured against the heli-hike check-in, with hotels checked on Booking.com.

For the Fox Glacier heli-hike, sleep in Fox Glacier township, on or just off Main Road. The trip checks in at Fox Glacier Guiding, 44 Main Road, and hotel pickup is not included, so a room in the township lets you walk to the briefing 20 minutes before the 8:50 am or 11:50 am departure. Cook Flat Road, which runs from the township toward Lake Matheson, suits you if you have a car and want the lake at dawn. Franz Josef, about 25 km north, has more rooms and works when Fox is full, at the cost of a drive back for check-in. Book two nights if you can: the heli-hike is weather-dependent, and the operator advises booking it for your first day in Fox so a second day is left for a retry.

Fox is a small place. The township had 189 residents at the 2023 census, and November to March is the busiest period for the helicopter operators here, so book the room as soon as your heli-hike date is set. Every hotel below was opened on Booking.com in October 2026; the notes come from those listings. Prices change by date, so check yours on the listing.

Fox Glacier Township, Within Walking Distance of Check-In

Main Road is State Highway 6 as it passes through the village. It holds the Fox Glacier Guiding base at number 44, the InterCity bus stop outside that building, the Fox Glacier Store, a service station and the cafes. Sleep here and you need no car between your room and the helicopter. The trade-off is choice: the township has only a handful of motels and hotels, and they fill first.

  • Heartland Hotel Glacier Country sits at 43 Main Road, in the center of the township by its own description, with a licensed restaurant and bar with an open fireplace. It suits you if you want dinner without going back out.
  • Bella Vista Motel Fox Glacier is at 55 Main Road. Its listing puts Fox Glacier Guiding about 100 m away, and the studios and one-bedroom units have kitchenettes and double glazing. A glow-worm forest track starts next to the motel.
  • The Westhaven Motel, at 29 Main Road, lists underfloor heating, electric blankets and a kitchenette in every unit, and some suites have a spa bath. You can rent bikes there.

Cook Flat Road, on the Way to Lake Matheson

Cook Flat Road leaves State Highway 6 in the township and heads west toward Lake Matheson, about 5 km from the village. The first properties sit at the township end, a few minutes’ walk from the cafes. Farther out, the listings give a 5-minute drive to the lake, which is where DOC says the mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman are best at dawn and dusk on a fine, windless day. From the far end you drive to the heli-hike check-in, so this side suits travelers with a car.

  • Rainforest Motel, at 15 Cook Flat Road, has heated apartments with a kitchen or kitchenette and electric blankets, with cafes within a 5-minute walk by its listing.
  • Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier is at 11 Cook Flat Road, where it meets State Highway 6, with a restaurant and bar and rooms facing the mountains or farmland.
  • Mt Cook View Motel, at 203 Cook Flat Road, lists views of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, a kitchen or kitchenette in each unit and a spa bath in most rooms. Lake Matheson is about a 5-minute drive.
  • Fox Glacier TOP 10 Holiday Park & Motels, on Kerr Road, is the lower-cost choice here: heated cabins and motel units, three shared kitchens and Aoraki views across most of the park.

If you want the lake without driving yourself, the Lake Matheson half-day nature tour collects guests from their Fox accommodation, from $68 per person. Our walks page covers it with the free DOC tracks.

Franz Josef When Fox Is Full

Franz Josef is 24 km north, about 25 minutes by car, and has more accommodation and places to eat than Fox. Stay here if Fox is booked out for your dates, or if you also plan a flight from Franz Josef. The Fox heli-hike still checks in at 44 Main Road with no pickup, so you drive south in the morning and should leave enough time to arrive 20 minutes before departure. If you prefer to stay put, the Franz Josef 2.5-hour heli-hike checks in in Franz Josef, from $511 per person; see our Franz Josef heli-hike page.

  • Punga Grove, 40 Cron Street, rents apartments with a full kitchen and a deck, a 2-minute walk from the shops and cafes.
  • Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier, 36 Main Road, has a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner, and some rooms have a balcony.
  • Rainforest Retreat, 46 Cron Street, runs from backpacker rooms up to tree huts, with spa pools, a sauna and a bar.

If You Arrive Late or Fly Out Early

Hokitika has the nearest commercial airport, with daily flights from Christchurch, and is about two hours north of Fox by road. If your flight lands in the evening, spend that night in Hokitika and drive south in the morning, but book the heli-hike for the following day, not the day you drive. The same goes for an early flight out: sleep in Hokitika the night before. Queenstown is about five hours of driving to the south. Our guide on how to get to Fox Glacier has the drive and bus times.

Booking Tips

  • Book the heli-hike first. GetYourGuide cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, while a guest cancellation inside 24 hours is not refunded. Set the date, then book the room around it.
  • Plan two nights. A weather cancellation gets a full refund or a move to another departure if there is space, and a second day in Fox gives you that option. The weather guide explains how the call is made.
  • Fill up in town. Fox Glacier Motors is the fuel stop in Fox; the next pumps are in Franz Josef or about 120 km south in Haast.
  • Carry a card. We could not confirm an ATM in Fox, so do not count on cash. Many of the motels above have kitchens, and the Fox Glacier Store sells basics.
  • Check the comparison. If you are still choosing between the two glaciers, our Fox or Franz Josef guide sets the heli-hikes side by side, and the heli-hike breakdown lists what the trip includes.

The heli-hike is 4.9 from 370 GetYourGuide reviews and starts at $483 per person. When you have your dates, check availability before you book the room.
